Dear friends,
Olga, a little girl (whom we have not seen yet:) and I are doing well. God is still working in Moldova in a mighty way and we know that we need to trust Him with every detail of the ministry and our lives. We know that usually we bring you more news than prayer requests, but this time we want to correct it!
Our 60 full time staff members work in 5 big areas of the ministry. We call those areas 5 Cs. CAMPUS – where we reach university students for Christ and then disciple them. COVERAGE – where we reach out to people in every geographic area of the country primarily through the JESUS Film, but also through other means. COMMUNITY – where we work with people who are united by a common social status, a common interest or something else. Some examples of this would be FamilyLife or Student Venture. In Moldova we are working in the area of sports through Athletes in Action. CARE – where we spiritually care for the laborers “sent forth into His harvest”. COORDINATION – where we service all of the above. I will only cover CAMPUS in this letter.
CAMPUS: I cannot help but pick up where I left off last time. After one of our co-workers refused to sign a police report since the accusations were just ridiculous the cop left, BUT a few weeks after that she got a slip of paper in her mail. There was something about a courthouse there, so she thought it was a subpoena to appear before the court. When she went there she found out that the court hearing took place ... without her(!), she was found guilty (what a surprising outcome) and a slip in the mail was just a bill for her pay her fine! Don’t you love our legal system?!
Next fall we are planning to send 2 staff teams to 2 new difficult regions – a Muslim area in Russia and Tiraspol which is the capital of a breakaway Republic of Transnistria. De jure, Transnistria does not exit as a country, but de facto they have their own government, currency, stamps as well as military, armed militia and KGB. Just a few days ago 3 of our staff who went to give out student magazines on a large campus there were detained by KGB. After almost 2 weeks of interrogations everyone was finally able to get back home, but it was sure a close call. According to their penal code imprisonment was one option, a confiscation of the car as a means of “smuggling” was another option. We were all praying for this hard situation, and everyone is safely back. Well, we know that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood”. Right now we as leaders of the ministry are trying to find an appropriate approach for this region. Please pray for us.
Thank God for about 10,000 contacts we got from the distribution of 19,000 student magazines we published last summer. Please pray for us to be wise in using these contacts and to have the opportunity to follow up on each student and share the gospel with him or her. Pray for the students to be open.
Finally, on a personal note, please pray for our little girl to arrive into this world safely. Our medical system is not exactly... user-friendly, to say the least. Olga and I stopped by the hospital to which we have been assigned to(!) by the Moldovan uncle Sam. I think the pictures speak for themselves. Feel free to forward them to the people who so passionately talk about socialized medicine being the best thing out there and the need to set up one. In fact, we could even trade hospitals with them:)
These and other things are only possible with your help! Please allow us to thank you again from the bottom of our hearts!!!
From Moldova with love,
Yuri Boldirev
