Our Journey in Pictures

April 2, 2007

Dear friends,

We would like to tell you how the legal trouble we ended up in has been developing.

It took the authorities several weeks to shift our case from one court to another and finally we were told to come to the “Court of Appeal in Chisinau”. That was an interesting experience as well. Our case was now being studied by a panel of 3 judges. We were in a small room (about 400 sq. feet) and there were 30 other people there with us – everyone with his own case. The judges called people to the front one by one and only after every person was interrogated, etc they left the room and came back with everyone’s verdict.

Although we produced additional documents and explanations the judges decided not to overrule the decision of the first court. Of course, this is subjective, but as I was watching and listening I got an impression that they had already decided what the outcome would be before we even showed up. At one point the lawyer who was representing us was told by the judge not to say anything else but demanded for our accused worker to give answers himself. That looked very strange to me, but I guess I watched too many episodes of the 'Law and Order":)

In any case, our appeal was rejected and as we were talking about the case later, processing the impressions the judges were making we all felt like that it was extremely hard (not to say impossible) to find justice in Moldova... That very night as I was reading Matthew 10 God gave me a passage, “… before governors and kings shall ye be brought for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, be not anxious how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what ye shall speak.”

We thought everything was over, but little did we know… Two days ago, our financial manager was given a call from the "economic police". They told him they had some questions and invited him for a “talk”. The officer produced a copy of the list where we were recording donations which students participating in the conference were making toward the project. We indeed ask students to make a small donation toward some of our projectsto help augment costs as well as to help them appreciate and value what is going on better. The officer wanted to make sure we properly registered all those donations at our office putting the right amounts on our books. We produced all the documents he was interested in. Our financial manager was then asked to come again and bring ALL of our financial records for 2006. So, yesterday we spent quite a bit of time filling up 2 boxes. We took the boxes to the police station. The officer studied our reports for about 45 minutes, photocopied some. He also asked us to write up an explanation note about the way we receive donations from people. It looked like our answers satisfied him. The office said he would call us back if necessary. We know that our books are in order and we have all the right receipts. But who knows... Nothing would surprise me now... We have an expression in Russian, "They are digging under us".

We will sure keep you posted. Thank you again for your concern and prayers! They are truly appreciated!

From Moldova with love,

Yuri and Olga Boldirev
